Assisted living vs. memory care in the Coachella Valley
A family guide from Catalina Gardens, Palm Desert · Updated October 2026
Which kind of care fits? A plain-language guide to the difference and what to ask.
The short answer
Assisted living: help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing and medications, in your own suite.
Memory care: for Alzheimer’s or other dementia. Adds a secure setting, dementia-trained staff and calm routines.
| Assisted living | Memory care | |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Mostly independent, some daily help | Dementia, needs more supervision |
| Setting | Private or shared suites | A secured wing with its own garden |
| Cost | Depends on suite and care | Usually higher |
Signs it may be time for memory care
- Wandering or getting lost in familiar places
- Forgetting medications, or leaving the stove on
- A family caregiver who can’t safely keep up
Check the license
California licenses these communities as RCFEs. Look any community up on the state’s Care Facility Search.
Catalina Gardens: our RCFE license is pending. We’ll welcome residents once it’s approved, aiming for early 2027.
Paying for care
- Medicare doesn’t cover room and board.
- Medi-Cal’s Assisted Living Waiver works only at participating communities.
- Long-term care insurance and VA benefits often help.
Questions to ask on any tour
- If needs increase, can my parent stay?
- How do you handle medications, falls and hospital visits?
- How many caregivers are on each shift, day and night?
